WINGED SPRINT CARS RETURN TO VETERANS MOTORPLEX AT THE RIM IN 2027
October 16, 2026 – Millersville, Tennessee – Pavement Pounders today announced their first of two weekends of 410-winged pavement sprint car racing in 2027. Pavement Pounders will promote the reintroduction of winged pavement sprint car racing at Veterans Motorplex at the Rim in Millersville, Tennessee June 4-5, 2027.
It will be the first time 410-winged pavement sprint cars have run at the racy high-banked quarter mile since August 6, 2021. But this will be the first time 410’s have raced at the track with unrestricted 410 power plants. Bobby Santos III won that last King of the Wing event over five years ago.
An open practice is scheduled for Friday June 4 in conjunction with a regular scheduled program of local racing classes. A complete racing program for the winged sprint cars will be on tap the following evening on Saturday June 5. The “Mid-South 60” will conclude the weekends racing action with a 60-lap feature event. It will be the longest winged sprint car race ever contested in the state of Tennessee.
It will be the final winged pavement sprint car event of the week in the area that already includes at stop by the Race for the Million series at the nearby Nashville Fairgrounds two nights earlier. Veterans Motorplex at the Rim is roughly thirty minutes north of the Nashville Fairgrounds.
A complete event information package and website for the race teams and fans will be announced in the coming weeks.
This will be an invitational event. Teams who would like to be considered for an invitation will be added to a list prior to the event. Registration details of this process will also be announced in the coming weeks. Once the event website is up-and-running, all information pertaining to this event will be made available there. Until then, Pavement Pounders https://facebook.com/PavementPoundrs/ will be the primary source for news and updates.
Veterans Motorplex at the Rim proved to be a very racy quarter mile for winged pavement sprint cars as evidence of that 2021 event. Bobby Santos III won a thriller over Jason Blonde that included sensational racing through heavy lapped traffic. Santos III came from the seventh starting position to take home the checkered flag. In victory lane he commented “It turned out to be really fun. It felt really racy. It wasn’t what I expected. We passed some cars and could really move round. It turned out to be a really fun racetrack.”
It’s unknown at this early time which teams from across the Country and Canada will be a part of the upcoming invitational process. Due to the expected abundance of cars in the area, there won’t be a shortage of available teams. It would be a safe bet that Santos III will be one of the first drivers offered an invitation since he is the defending race champion.
Teams will be looking to lower the all-time track record of California’s Eric Humphries 11.270 seconds set on August 6, 2021.
Stay tuned for additional updates regarding purse, event format, sanctioning body, and other event details in the coming days/weeks
DETAILS OF NEW 410-WINGED SPRINT CAR INVITATIONALS ANNOUNCED
August 31, 2026 – Event promoters Jim Hanks and David Sink have announced their intentions to promote a select few 410-winged pavement sprint car invitational races beginning in 2027. The details and location of these invitational events will be announced in the coming weeks.
The duo considered becoming event promoters at the urging of several drivers and car owners who have expressed their concern for the limited number of 410-winged pavement sprint car events currently in the Midwest. There were only four total unrestricted 410-winged pavement sprint car events held in the Midwest in 2026, and all of these were contested in the state of Michigan. Indiana and Ohio were left dark.
The exact number of invitational events planned hasn’t been decided as of today’s date. The duo has no intentions of creating a traveling series but rather promoting select weekend invitational events.
Hanks is no stranger to pavement sprint car racing. He is a former car owner who fielded entries in the USAC National Sprint Car Series, Silver Crown Series, and several winged asphalt sprint car events with the now defunct HOSS and AVSS groups.
Hanks created the Must See Racing Extreme Sprint Series in 2010 before selling it prior to the current racing season due to health reasons. During his one-year hiatus, his rehabilitation, has returned him to good health. The highlights of his former series were extensive. It included a national television package in the early years with FOX Sports and promoting the $10,000 to win 410-winged pavement sprint car event at the famed Bristol Motor Speedway in Bristol, Tennessee in 2011.
Sink is a current pavement sprint car journalist, photographer, and statistician. He manages the Social Media platform Pavement Pounders and is responsible for the National Pavement Sprint Car Rankings. He was recently inducted into the Little 500 Hall of Fame this past May.
Sink’s role in promotion isn’t just in media interests. From 2008-2015 he was part of the ownership of the International Outlaw Figure 8 Series (IOFS) and Winged Outlaw Figure 8 Series (WOFS). Both were touring late model figure 8 series based in the Midwest.
